LETTERS FROM OUTSIDE THE BOWL

The series of letters go in tandem with aspects of innocence where a fictional character is developed in order to cope with trauma, displacement, and conflict. We see these types of characters or imaginary friends found not only in children, but in adults with mental disabilities and supernatural encounters; schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, apparitions, etc. They reveal, according to several theories of psychology, a child's anxieties, fears, goals and perceptions of the world through that child's conversations. When these conversations exceed past adulthood, they’re often considered deliterious.

So, not only was I interested in having a seemingly harmless imaginary friend as an adult, but I wanted to explore the idea of interior paranoia and survelliance and the development of that imaginary entity in response to concerns surrounding privacy infringement. The idea that something so small and perceptively unalarming could impact aspects of privacy on a larger scale. More less, it’s a comment on my parents’ concerns, similar to socio-political, post millenial groups and their concerns with technology infringing on privacy (alexa, Google Home, etc). While these do impact some aspects of privacy, their accumulation of detail is on a commercial, face-value level.
